Dermal fillers, commonly called wrinkle fillers, are injectable treatments that can restore and enhance facial volume and define your facial features for a more balanced and youthful appearance. When an experienced practitioner injects a dermal filler into the treatment area, it can add volume to the cheeks and mid-face, plump your lips, and smooth lines and wrinkles.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that work to restore facial volume with specialized blends of active ingredients that mimic natural collagen in the skin. Though the formulas of dermal fillers differ, they each add volume to balance your features and enhance your natural beauty. At Rejuve Med-Spa, we offer a range of dermal fillers because each one excels for a different use.

The Juvederm® family of dermal fillers uses hyaluronic acid, a water-attracting molecule that occurs naturally in the skin and is responsible for keeping your skin flexible and hydrated. The Juvederm® collection offers excellent fillers for treating the lips, around the mouth, the mid-face, and cheeks, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.  Juvederm® products are made by Allergan, which is also the manufacturer of Botox®. 

These dermal fillers also utilize hyaluronic acid to create natural-looking volume. The formulas in the Restylane® collection can improve volume and shape in the mid-face, plump the lips, and improve hollowness in places such as the tear troughs. 

Unlike Juvederm® and Restylane®, Radiesse® fillers use calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in gel, a naturally occurring substance commonly found in the bones. The calcium particles vary in size depending on the specific filler used. Radiesse® makes an excellent choice for deep lines and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. 

Sculptra® contains a poly-L-lactic acid, which can stimulate collagen production to produce long-lasting, enhanced volume. This filler works well for deep lines and wrinkles, including marionette lines and nasolabial folds.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers require little to no downtime, which means you can return to your usual activities right after treatment. You may experience minor bruising, swelling, or sensitivity in the injection site, but this is typically minor and will fade within a day or two. You can gently apply ice to the treatment area to help alleviate these symptoms if they occur. Most individuals experience little to no reaction to dermal filler injections.

Dermal fillers can be effective for most areas of the face. Dermal fillers can treat a variety of cosmetic concerns, and treatment is customized to meet your aesthetic goals and desired results. Popular uses for dermal fillers include:

Botox® is a popular addition to dermal filler treatment as it can provide fantastic results for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are best suited for deeper lines and wrinkles in more static areas of the face, while Botox® is great for lines and wrinkles in active regions of the face. 

The effects of dermal fillers are temporary, and over time their formula will begin to diminish, making it an excellent option for those who are not comfortable committing to a long-term procedure. Each dermal filler has an expected lifespan, which will vary depending on its formula and placement. 

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers typically last between six months and two years. Fillers used in the lips or other dynamic areas of the face do not usually last as long as those for the mid-face area or deep wrinkles. Because Sculptra® and Radiesse® promote collagen development, their results can last two years or more. The collagen produced typically outlasts the filler material, which can help results last longer.
