Which Is Better – Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion?
If your skin looks dull or needs a boost, exfoliation can help. Exfoliating treatments remove the outer layers of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, healthy layers. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion exfoliate the skin in two different ways. While they both have skin-rejuvenating benefits, your Rejuve Med Spa aesthetician will help you choose the best one for your needs.

What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is referred to as a “chemical exfoliant.” It removes dead layers of skin by gently breaking up the bonds between the dead skin cells so they can peel away. Chemical peels use a range of different acids. They are highly customizable, with some peels fitting into a lunch break and others requiring a few days of redness and flaking. These peels treat many different skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, signs of aging, and acne or acne scars.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a treatment that manually exfoliates layers of dead cells. At Rejuve Med Spa, we use the DiamondTome™ wand, a device that gently loosens and suctions away dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, clearer surface. Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and tones, and the potential for a reaction to the treatment is very low. This treatment can address textural issues, dullness, and pigmentation problems.

Which is Better – Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion?
The differences between a chemical peel and microdermabrasion can contribute to which one is a better treatment option for your needs.
Type of Exfoliation
Chemical peels use acids to remove dead skin cells, making them a type of chemical exfoliation. This type does not require any physical buffing or exfoliation of the skin. Microdermabrasion is a type of manual or physical exfoliation, meaning that it uses an exfoliating surface to remove dead skin cells. Some people may have skin conditions that affect which type of exfoliation is safer.
What They Treat
Chemical peels treat a wider range of skin concerns than microdermabrasion. Deeper types of chemical peels are significantly more intensive than microdermabrasion, making them suitable for treating deeper issues with texture, pigmentation, and signs of aging. Your aesthetician will discuss your goals and which treatment can help achieve them.
Downtime Required
Microdermabrasion generally requires no downtime. Your skin may look flushed and feel sensitive for a few hours after treatment. A light chemical peel may have no downtime and leave your skin immediately brighter. More intensive chemical peels can require a few days of redness and flaking skin. All treatments require consistent sun protection.
Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion?
Most healthy adults can benefit from chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Both treatments can gently rejuvenate and restore your skin, although chemical peels can provide a more intensive treatment. Some people may be better candidates for chemical treatments, while others may be better candidates for microdermabrasion.
