How Does Botox® Work?
Facial expressions form a natural part of the way we communicate with each other. Our faces are dynamic, active, and full of motion. However, this constant motion can repeatedly tug at the skin, creating lines and wrinkles. Botox® can eliminate these lines and wrinkles by stopping the crease-causing facial muscles while keeping your natural facial expressions.
How Does Botox® Work?
Botox® contains botulinum toxin, a molecule that blocks the communication between nerves and muscles. A trained injection specialist will inject Botox® into the facial muscles that create your problem wrinkles while avoiding other nearby muscles. This precision allows the elimination of even deep lines and wrinkles without losing any of your natural expressiveness.
The botulinum toxin in Botox® interferes with signals transferred by a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. It stops the nerves from sending signals to the muscle, telling it to contract. As a result, the muscle becomes smooth, and no longer pulls on the skin. The skin relaxes, and lines and wrinkles disappear.
What is Botox® Treatment Like?
An injection specialist will inject Botox® into targeted areas of the face. They will need to inject several areas to achieve relaxation of all the involved muscles. Most people should expect three treatment areas to manage crow’s feet and five treatment areas to address forehead lines or creases between the brows. Injections feel like a slight pinch, and the entire treatment should be over in less than half an hour. This makes Botox® a very popular “lunchtime” treatment that people have on their lunch break and return to work immediately. Results last about three to four months.
Where Can Botox® Be Used?
Botox® has been approved for the treatment of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and glabellar lines (wrinkles between the brows). However, Botox® works in many other locations on the body, including:
- Neck lines and bands of muscle
- “Bunny lines” on the upper part of the nose
- Chin dimples
- Lines around the mouth
- “Gummy smile” where the smile reveals too much gum tissue
- Downturned corners of the mouth
Botox® has been used in medical treatments for decades. Its safety has been well-established, and it has uses almost anywhere on the body, from reducing eyelid twitches to managing excessive sweating.

Is There Any Downtime with Botox®?
People often go directly back to work or another activity after Botox®. Some people experience swelling or sensitivity in the area for a day or two. You will have no restrictions on your activities.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?
If you have expression lines and wrinkles you would like to get rid of, you may be a good candidate for Botox®. Let us know during your consultation if you have ever had a reaction to a botulinum product before. Pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with certain neuromuscular conditions should not have Botox®.
